A Sonnet to Fare Thee Well

Farewell, goodbye and now it’s time to go,
I bid you all the best to journey on.
For life is but a time on river’s flow
The whirls and eddies take us from the sun.
The current pulls the boat we ride downstream
And no oars or rudder can change our course.
The routes we cannot take are but a dream,
And no halting at passing staithes and wharves.
By stars we set our compass, by the moon
We watch the passing towns, woodlands and fields.
Our final port approaches all too soon
The journey over ere the harvest yields.
However brief our time upon this river,
It is our time to make our mark forever.
