When you kind of asked me

What I didn’t expect

I didn’t really answer, did I?

Just prevaricated instead.

I couldn’t, you see

For on this occasion, the emotion,

The feeling came far too close to me.

It is not simply possible

For me to ignore

The past, the things

You said before,

So, forgive me for not being honest

At the time

And perhaps, in the last line,

I can just squeeze the word ‘love’ in.
